OPÉRA GARNIER
The Opéra Garnier illuminates Paris’ 9th arrondissement thanks to its architecture and wonderful ornamentation. The building required the intervention of painters, tile-setters and nearly seventy sculptors in order to complete the façade. Inaugurated in 1875 with guests from all over Europe, it was given listed-building status over 40 years later, in 1923. Even today, sublime performances are still held there.
PLACE DE LA MADELEINE
Visit the majestic EGLISE DE LA MADELEINE church, designed by Napoleon I and encircled by 52 Corinthian columns. For gourmet delights, the nearby square has some of Paris’ finest delicatessens: FAUCHON and HEDIARD.
SAINT LAZARE STATION
The Saint-Lazare train station is the hub for numerous metro lines – it is one of Paris’ most important junctions. The station is a tourist destination in itself, due to its glass entrance building, designed by Jean-Marie Charpentier. The Saint-Lazare station has been a listed building since 1984.
